Scenario #3
You’re the youngest reporter at the SeeItAll Times and have been assigned to the night shift. You’re always asked to do some of the “grunt work” – getting coffee or picking up food. They’ve given you the nickname “new kid.” You’re told by one of the other reporters it’s just part of the initiation process and everyone’s done it. After two months you’ve had enough. What do you do and why?

Basic reap of scenario
A new, younger employee is being sort of hazed by veteran employees.
- What would you do in this situation? (If you cannot agree, you can have more than one suggestion)
Our group decided we would give the situation time as it has only been two months. Keep working hard and proving yourself and things should start to get better. After six months, it would be appropriate to approach a higher up and let them know all you have contributed and thus what you would like to see for yourself going forward in the workplace.
- How could you prevent this situation from occurring in the future? (If you cannot agree, you can have more than one suggestion)
This is a part of starting anywhere so we do not think it can be prevented; however, doing your best to not get frustrated and continuing to work hard will make the situation better.
- What workplace skills and behaviors are needed to succeed in this work environment?
Definitely a strong work ethic, tough skin, enthusiasm, and passion are all skills and behaviors needed to succeed in this work environment.
Group Reflection:
This is a part of life and being humble and working diligently is a great way to not get overwhelmed by this situation.
