Chanel started covering culture and entertainment, but after working for a campaign in her hometown, she began to cover social issues on campus, bomb threats at several HBCUs. While studying playwriting, her short play “Between Floors” was produced by the student theatre organization The Howard Players for their annual 8×10 play festival. She is a member of the Playwright’s Arena cohort, hosted by Arena Stage. Chanel is an intern at kweliTV, A Black film streaming service. There she writes stories about filmmakers on the platform, including a profile on an NAACP Image Award nominee. Chanel Cain is a graduating senior at Howard University from Everett, Washington. During undergrad, Chanel majored in journalism and minored in playwriting. She has written for several campus publications, including The Hilltop and Truth Be Told. She currently serves as co-editor of the Howard University News Service. Chanel got her start covering culture and entertainment, reporting on university events and television and film. After serving as a field organizer for a campaign in her hometown, she branched out to cover social issues on campus, including the Blackburn Center Takeover Protest and string of bomb threats at HBCUs. Her works have been published on HUNS, the Seattle Medium, and several other campus publications. Beyond journalism, Chanel has a deep love for theatre and creative writing. While studying playwriting for two years, her short play “Between Floors” was chosen to be produced by the student theatre organization The Howard Players for their annual 8×10 play festival. She was able to join the Playwright’s Area, a playwriting cohort hosted by the D.C. theater Arena Stage. Chanel is currently serving as an intern at kweliTV, A Black-film oriented streaming service. There she writes stories about the different filmmakers on the platform, one of her favorites being a profile on a self taught animator being nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Post-grad, Chanel hopes to continue writing about Black stories, giving those who need a voice a platform to tell their stories.
